- Will the authorities in the Ukraine cull stray dogs ahead of the European Cup there in 2012?
- WSPA have received many appeals in regards to EURO 2012, and Naturewatch (a UK based charity) is active on this issue. The EURO 2012 organisers have already been contacted at the international level and UEFA have contacted the local organisers in Ukraine telling them they don't have to get rid of the strays. However, it appears that local corruption is the main driver for the mass extermination and this, unfortunately, is not something that WSPA or any other international organisation can change from the outside.
WSPA works with several organisations in Ukraine. Unfortunately, one of the main problems with animal welfare work in Ukraine is that these existing groups are not working together effectively and are all trying to deal with the animal welfare problems independently. The government (local or national) is unlikely to listen to, or take seriously, dozens of different organisations all trying to approach the same issue separately. Currently WSPA is trying to maintain a relationship with our existing member societies and to help them to develop as professional organisations.
The animal welfare problem in Ukraine is not something that is being ignored. However, to change a country's cultural and social attitudes will take time and effort; the momentum for change needs to come from within. WSPA and other organisations are continuing to follow and work on this issue.
